Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)

The Washington State Department of Ecology (Ecology) and the Washington State Department of Health (Health) are developing a chemical action plan that identifies sources and recommends actions to reduce the use, release, and exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in Washington. The Haz Waste Program is a part of a King County PFAS workgroup, which monitors Ecology's PFAS Chemical Action Plan process and provides input and comments.

PFAS, also known as "forever chemicals," are used in a variety of common products such as water-resistant clothing, nonstick cookware, and car waxes. PFAS are a probable carcinogen, with links to high cholesterol, thyroid disease, and reproductive effects.
